When to Do the Three-Stop Day

May, June, September and early October. The reasoning is not really about weather — it is about one staircase.

Why the shoulder months

Two of the three stops are towns and work in any month. Gaztelugatxe is the constraint, and it is a single narrow route: one path down, one causeway, one flight of 241 steps, no shade.

When it is busy you are queueing on that staircase rather than looking at anything, and stopping for a photograph holds up the people behind you. The Bizkaia council caps daily numbers with free timed permits precisely because the access route cannot absorb a crowd.

In the shoulder months the same coast comes with a fraction of the people, the climb is pleasant instead of an ordeal, and the light in September is better than in July.

The months

May–June. Green, mild, long days, manageable numbers. Arguably the best of it.

July–August. Peak. Hot on unshaded stone, the busiest weeks on the headland, and permits required daily rather than at weekends. Entirely doable — thousands manage it — but it is the worst version of the day. Your two hours at Gaztelugatxe will include queueing.

September–early October. Our pick. Warm, thinning crowds, excellent light.

Late October–April. Quiet, dramatic, and genuinely worth considering for the towns. Two cautions below.

The winter caution that matters

This coast is wet in winter — it is green because it rains — and the specific hazard is wet stone steps in coastal wind. Two hundred and forty-one of them, exposed, with a handrail and a drop.

That is not a reason to avoid winter. It is a reason to wear proper shoes, take the descent slowly, and be honest with yourself on the day about whether to go down at all. The clifftop view is the famous one and it is fully available without the staircase.

Short days are the other winter factor: a 09:00 departure is fine, but the light goes early.

The stops that do not care what month it is

Bermeo works year-round. It is a working port, not a seasonal attraction.

Gernika likewise — and arguably better out of season, when the Casa de Juntas and the oak are quieter. This is a stop that benefits from not being crowded.

If anything, the towns argue mildly for the shoulder and winter months while the headland argues loudly for the shoulder. They agree on the shoulder.

Time of day

Not really your choice on this tour — departure is fixed at 09:00 — but the timing works in your favour. You reach Gaztelugatxe mid-morning, ahead of the worst of the day in summer, and the towns come later when they are properly awake.

If you were doing it independently, early morning at the headland is the single most effective decision available.

Booking

Whatever the month, book ahead in summer. The coach fills and, more importantly, the free Gaztelugatxe permits are capped — the tour arranges them where required, but it can only do so if there is a slot.
