Gaztelugatxe, Bermeo and Gernika: Hour by Hour

Three stops, one coach, back the same afternoon. Here is where the hours actually go, taken from the operator’s own itinerary rather than estimated.

The running order

08:50 — pickup. A bus stop at the tourist office next to the Guggenheim Museum in central Bilbao. Walkable from most of the centre. Hotel pickup is not included, so allow for getting there.

09:00 — departure.

~45 minutes — coach to the coast.

About 2 hours — San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, free time. Not a guided walk. You are set down and the two hours are yours: the 1.1km path down, the causeway, 241 steps up to the hermitage, and the climb back.

~25 minutes — coach to Bermeo.

30 minutes — Bermeo, guided. A working fishing port. Half an hour with a guide covers the harbour and the old quarter above it.

~30 minutes — coach to Gernika.

45 minutes — Gernika, guided. The longest guided stop of the day: the town, the Casa de Juntas and the oak.

Then back to Bilbao, arriving in the afternoon.

Is two hours enough at Gaztelugatxe?

Yes, comfortably — for most people it is the right amount rather than a generous one.

A steady round trip down the path, across the causeway, up the 241 steps, time at the top, and back up to the road takes most people 45 to 90 minutes. Two hours leaves room to stop, take photographs, sit at the top for a while, and not feel hunted on the return climb.

What it does not leave room for is dawdling at both ends. If you want to explore the clifftop paths as well as descending, you will be watching the clock.

If you do not descend at all, two hours is generous — the famous view is from the clifftop before the path drops, and plenty of people stay up there.

Where the day feels tight

Bermeo at 30 minutes. Honestly about right for the harbour and a walk, and too short if you wanted a coffee sitting down.

Gernika at 45 minutes. Enough for the town, the assembly house and the oak with a guide. Not enough for the Peace Museum — that needs its own visit. See what to see in Gernika.

Food

Not included at any stop, and this catches people.

There is nothing at the top of Gaztelugatxe — no café, no kiosk. Carry water and something to eat for that stretch at minimum. Bermeo and Gernika both have places to buy food, but with 30 and 45 minute stops you are buying something to carry, not sitting down to lunch.

Eat a proper breakfast before 09:00 and bring more water than feels necessary in summer.

Free time versus guided, and why it matters here

This tour is guided at Bermeo and Gernika and free at Gaztelugatxe. That split is the right way round.

Gaztelugatxe explains itself: you walk, you climb, you look. A guide adds little that a sign could not. Gernika is the opposite — the buildings are modest, much of the town was rebuilt, and without the context you are looking at a pleasant square and an oak tree without knowing why either matters.

Some cheaper versions of this route give more free time and less guiding. That is a fine trade on the coast and a poor one in Gernika, which is the reason this site leads on the guided version rather than the cheapest.
