What to Bring
Food is not included at any stop and there is nothing at the top of Gaztelugatxe. Shoes, water, a wind layer — and the one item people always skip.
Short list, and the first two matter more than the rest.
Shoes you can climb 241 steps in
Not sandals. Not new shoes.
The Gaztelugatxe stop is a 1.1km walk down a rough path, a stone causeway, and 241 steps up — then all of it back, with the uphill on the return. The steps are old, uneven in places, and slippery when wet.
Trainers or walking shoes with grip. This is the single item that changes your day.
Water, and something to eat
Food and drink are not included at any stop, and there is nothing at the top of Gaztelugatxe — no café, no kiosk, no tap.
Bermeo and Gernika have places to buy food, but with thirty and forty-five minute stops you are buying something to carry, not sitting down. Eat properly before the 09:00 departure and bring more water than feels necessary between May and September.
A wind layer, in every month
The causeway is fully exposed and the Cantabrian coast makes its own weather. A bright morning in Bilbao means very little about conditions on the headland forty-five minutes later.
Something windproof, packable, and preferably waterproof. This is the item people skip and regret, and it is the one that costs nothing to carry.
Sun cover, May to September
No shade anywhere on the route, and the stone reflects. A hat with a brim, sunglasses, sun cream applied before you set off.
The rest
A small bag, not a large one — you are carrying it up and down 241 steps.
Cash in small notes for food in the towns, though cards are widely accepted.
A passport or ID. Sensible for any guided day trip, and some operators on this coast ask for it explicitly.
A charged phone. Not for emergencies so much as because the clifftop view is the photograph everyone wants and the descent eats battery on cold days.
What not to bother with
Walking poles. The steps have a handrail; poles are more nuisance than help on a staircase.
A large camera you will not want to carry down and up. The view that matters is from the clifftop before the descent, and a phone handles it.
Dressing up for Gernika. Ordinary respectful clothes are right. Nothing about the stop requires more than that, and see what to see in Gernika for the frame of mind, which matters more than what you wear.
If the climb is not for you
Bring the same things and stay at the clifftop. The famous view — island, causeway, the whole composition — is from up there, before the path drops. You lose the bell and the hermitage; you keep the reason people come, and you will have two hours to enjoy it without a staircase.
Nobody on the tour will mind.
